What the
hell is a Mr. Capone E? And why is Twista messing with
this guy?
I never thought I’d say this, but apparently
Twista has completely fucking lost it. What’s
next, a collabo with Insane Clown Posse?
The other day I had the radio on (which almost
always turns out to be a mistake) and after a
song from Chris Brown or
fucking Fergie or whatever
57-spins-a-day artist it was, I hear what is
immediately recognizable as a shitty beat, and
then Twista’s voice, and then some guy starts
talking in a ese voice about “a lil’ something
for the ladies.”
And then comes this:
“It's not love, comin' from a straight thug
All up in the club, lookin' pretty wanna bug?
That's what it was now what's left so lady here
I come so pass me the bug
Getting you all sprung off the tongue young cute
playboy, when I stun
One by one you standin' in line, and one by one
I'm checkin' out your rump
Oh yes Mr. Capone double E
Internationally known as a pimp daddy
I make you feel so good hynas scream "we love
you papi"
Stop me from cockin' but my game is ultra tight
Have you screamin' out my name baby girl you
lookin fine, bottom line
Lady lady there's no love for this jock,
I just wanna get you hot, find your spot, never
wanna stop
Hit it and quit it, are you wit it, let's just
keep this little secret but don't catch no
feelings when you're squeelin
Don't get it twisted...”
Apparently the name of this horrible ass song
is “Don’t Get It Twisted.” And I’m not getting
it twisted -- there’ve been a handful of
terrible songs that hit the airwaves this year,
and this EASILY takes the crown for worst rap
song of the year. I don’t know if anyone else in
the nation is unlucky enough to have heard this
song, but I listen to the radio for an average
of about 45 minutes to an hour a week, and I’ve
heard this shit like five times this month. Booo.
I did some Googling to find out who the fuck
was responsible for this shit, and it’s some
gangster looking guy who’s apparently affiliated
with Bizzy Bone, and a bunch of
guys with Mr. in their name (Mr.
Criminal, Mr. Sancho, Mr. Silent,
etc.). Apparently he’s responsible for such hit
albums as Last Man Standing, Ol Skool Music
Vol. 2, Dedicated 2 The Oldies, Always And
Forever, and now... the official soundtrack
to the complete desecration of hip hop.
I’m not gonna argue about whether or not this
Mr. Capone E. character is actually a gangster
or not; I don’t really care about any of that
shit. If dude was dedicated enough to take
photos for the cover of his album with a blue
rag and SG embroidered on his sleeve, fine, I
believe he’s a Sureno. But that doesn’t mean
gangsters can’t make wack ass music and/or rap
like 11 year olds. And it doesn’t mean that
Twista, who’s made pretty good decisions in the
past, can’t get sucked into it.
GHETTO REPORTERS
Ghetto Reporters
Bone Thugs’ Layzie Bone on staying hungry,
gangsta rap and working with Phil Collins
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony play Friday, Sept. 1 at
City Hall
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s video “Foe Tha Luv of $”
is perhaps the best “in the ’hood” video ever made.
It has a grainy camcorder-held feel, and bitches,
rims and bling are conspicuously absent. The
Brothers Bone, featuring Layzie, Bizzy, Flesh, Wish
and Krayzie, are cornrowed and dressed in dull black
sweatshirts and no-name shoes as they rap like a
barbershop quartet at high speed. Even Eazy-E, who
makes a cameo, dresses conservatively: with no
jewelry, he sports a black button-down, jeans and a
baseball cap as he stands on the corner
straight-slinging rocks—and the crackheads look
real. It’s a video about survival—not styling.
Still managing to keep it real in current
hip-hop’s climate of romanticizing thug life, the
Grammy-winning Cleveland rap group have reunited for
their first album together in six years, Thug
Stories, due out this month. They’ve also just
minted a deal with Interscope, with plans to release
a new album before Christmas. The Scene
caught up with Layzie by phone while BTNH were
finishing a late night studio session in L.A.
Scene: They call what
you’re doing Gangsta rap.
Layzie: Oh that’s what they call
it? I call it realistic street rap. We ghetto
reporters. We really just telling how it is in the
’hood. Some things we might make into a story—you
know how you write and make things more attractive
to an audience. But at the same time it’s real
things going on like that. It ain’t gangsta rap—it’s
real life.
Scene: How does
Thug Stories compare to other BTNH albums?
Layzie: It’s BTNH hungry
again—you know what I mean.
Scene: Bizzy isn’t on
Thug Stories?
Layzie: No, he’s not.
Scene: Is he gonna be
on the Interscope album?
Layzie: Bizzy-Bone is not a part
of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. He’s doing his thing. But
we never know. We all family. Flesh is my brother.
Wish is my cousin. Bizzy is a lifelong friend. And
Krayzie is my best friend since junior high.
Scene: Is Flesh N-Bone
still in jail?
Layzie: Yeah, he’ll be home the
beginning of 2008.
Scene: How did BTNH
come up with the fast singing and rapping
combination? You’ve spawned a lot of imitators.
Layzie: Our parents sing. We
grew up in a household of music, for real, around
drum sets and all that. So we was duplicating New
Edition and doing their steps way back then. And
then after Run-DMC came out, it was the thing to
rap, so we started rapping early, like 7 and 8 years
old in the early ’80s. So we were mimicking Run DMC,
and since we were already singers, over the years,
we put the two together. We weren’t even conscious
of what we were doing—that we were adding harmony
into the rap—because we had been singing together so
long. You know how they used to do the doo-wop?—and
somebody hold the bass—somebody hold different
notes. That was us. And we would have contests to
see who could put the most words in a bar—that’s
where the fast rapping came from—just being
competitive.
Scene: So when did
things really start to happen career-wise?
Layzie: We put out an
independent album in Cleveland in ’91 called
Faces of Death. We were working, doing
different talent shows and trying our hand and one
day we went out to L.A. One-way bus tickets. Did the
homeless thing out there for like fives months.
Finally met Eazy E, who signed us. Some things we
had like Creepin’ on Ah Come Up (EP)—just
the raps but not in the song formats; but most of
our first album E. 1999 Eternal came on the
spot. When we was with E we were inspired to really
tell our story and describe our ghetto.
Scene: What did BTNH
gain from working with Eazy-E?
Layzie: The main thing we
learned from him was entrepreneurship. Just by
seeing him be the man—the rapper and the boss,
controlling the show, you know, that really sent us
in the right direction.
Scene: You’re the only
rap group to have collaborated with Eazy, Tupac,
B.I.G. and Big Pun while they were alive. But what
was it like to work with Phil Collins for “Home” on
your 2002 LP?
Layzie: Phil Collins was the
man. He was real cool, humble, down to earth. We
went to Switzerland to shoot the video. He kicked it
with us—really talked to us. Told us a few of his
stories in the game. He was real peoples. We called
him Phil-Bone for the day.

First off, big shouts to Big Rich
aka Fillmore Rich from SF; dude’s about to big ass
things with his debut
album, Block Tested, Hood Approved.
The
video for “That’s The Business” debuted on
MTV and BET this week, and hopefully it’ll stay in
rotation. The album drops on Tuesday, Oct. 3. There’s a
ton of slaps on it, especially “Go Crazy,” feat the big
boss San Quinn. Be careful if
you go to his MySpace page, though; shit’s super HTML’d
out and takes hella days to load.
The West Coast’s flagship pothead
Big
Snoop Dogg will be gracing the
Showtime series “Weeds” on Monday at 10pm pst.
Snoop will be playing himself, which seems like
a no-brainer since the real Snoop is a better
character than any of the show’s writers could
ever create.
Speaking of characters, the same goes
for Flavor Flav’s crazy
ass. If you haven’t seen every episode of this
season of
“Flavor Of Love 2” (filmed in the wine
country of Northern Cali; gotta keep the Night

outtake available, hunt that shit down. Last
week, I was switching channels between Flavor
and his brothel of money-grubbing stunts and the
crazy white trash assholes from “Dog The Bounty
Hunter” and it was such a violent attack on the
senses that I almost lost my shit and puked all
over the couch.

Two New Albums Coming
From Bone Thugs-N-Harmony
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony may have lost some members over the years, but
they apparently still have their work ethic.
The veteran hip-hop group have two new albums on the way, Thug
Stories on September 19 via KOCH, and a still-untitled release that's
expected later this year.
Thug Stories, the follow-up to 2002's Thug World Order, will be the
group's first LP to be recorded as a trio featuring Krayzie Bone,
Wish Bone and the
bite-prone
Layzie Bone. Bizzy Bone left the group to
dedicate more
of himself to God, while Flesh-N-Bone is serving a 10-year
prison sentence for
armed assault.
Thug Stories is the Cleveland group's first album for KOCH. The lead
single is the just-released "Don't Stop."
The second album may include some rhymes that Flesh-N-Bone has
recorded while incarcerated. "Everybody is excited to come back, 'cause
Bone is where it started from," Krayzie told MTV News.
An impressive list of guests will also be on the disc, including
Ice Cube, Akon, producer Swizz Beatz and others.
"We got Dr. Dre, we got Three 6 Mafia, we got Kanye
West, we got a lot of people on the album," said Krayzie. "We got
Mariah Carey. She promised that she was gonna do a song with us
once, and she kept her promise."
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony are touring the U.S. all month, but no Canadian
dates are on the calendar. In between recording and performing, Krayzie
is also developing a running shoe line called TL Classics.
Have a listen to these Thug Stories:
"Don't Stop"
"Thug Stories"
"Rich Man's World"
"Fire"
"She Got Crazy"
"Still No Surrender"
"What You See"
"Cleveland Thug Boys"
"Call Me"
"Stand Not In Our Way"

Stone, Bone
Thugs kept up energy
Columbia-native Stevie Stone conducts a
sound check Tuesday night at The Blue Note.
Stone performed as the opening act for rap
group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
Bone Thugs-N-Harmony set the tone
at The Blue Note Tuesday night by continuously asking where
the weed smokers were and rocking the sold-out crowd with
its mid-’90s hit and songs from its new album.
The show featured local rapper Stevie Stone and touring
member Big Caz as openers. Alongside his dancers, Stone gave
a shout-out to “CoMO” and “the 573,” which warmed up the
crowd nicely. Caz delivered as well with his hit “I Am,” and
with covers and mix-downs of T.I., 50 Cent and Tupac Shakur.
The buzz inside The Blue Note was focused on Bone Thugs.
The DJ teased the crowd with three-second samples, asking,
“Do you wanna hear some shit like this?”
When the time finally came for Bone Thugs to walk out on
stage, there was a party on stage, on the floor, in the
balcony and even in the bathroom.
Bone Thugs did a great job of keeping the crowd involved
throughout the show.
At one point, the group members brought eight women on
stage for a dance-off, and they also had performance cameos
by DJ Ice and a freestyle rapper.
The trio, featuring Krayzie Bone, Layzie Bone and Wish
Bone, portrayed the energy of the music they have been
making for the past decade and a half. Krayzie provided the
most vigor. Layzie and Wish, on the other hand, dished out
the attitude the group presents.
The set featured a couple songs off the group’s new
album, Thug Stories, but stuck mostly to the old-school
rhymes, such as “Thug Luv,” “1st of Tha Month” and “Weed
Song.”
The Cleveland-based group paid tribute to many former
artists as well. Mentor Eazy-E, friends Tupac Shakur and The
Notorious B.I.G. as well as former band member Flesh-N-Bone,
who is currently in jail, were all honored through song.
Also, former member Bizzy Bone was absent from the group
because of his pursuit to find God.
The energy never died throughout the set, even when Bone
Thugs provided a variety of sounds. Whether it was a
gangster rap, a quick and melodic delivery, or a slower “rap
ballad” such as “Days of Our Livez,” Bone Thugs had the
crowd going the whole way through the concert. The
excitement continued to grow to the point when Wish Bone
invited the entire crowd back to a hotel party after the
show.
Sure, Bone Thugs might not be the same rap group that won
a Grammy in 1996 and might be two members short, but the
concert was entertaining and loaded with enough liveliness
to get you high - in case getting high was a problem.
Just before the show ended, fans were informed to drive
home safely, but to not “surrender when you have a blunt in
your car.” So if you get lucky enough to see Bone Thugs,
hold on, because it’s a wild ride

Bizzy Bone Launches Homeless Outreach
Campaign, Preps New Album
Former
Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony member Bizzy Bone
is returning to the public eye, with plans to
release a new
solo album and launch a
very personal campaign for the homeless.
After a long
struggle with drug and alcohol abuse, Ohio rapper
Bizzy Bone is clean and has announced plans to
launch an outreach campaign. The project, called
"Walk In My Shoes," will form alliances and
partnerships with non-profit homeless organizations,
beginning with his hometown of Columbus.
In 2004, while
struggling with his addiction, Bizzy attempted to
walk on foot from Columbus to Cleveland - living and
sleeping on the streets as he made his journey.
"I've learned more
about life from the homeless, who are the ultimate
survivors than I have anywhere else. I admire them.
I've learned a lot about respect because I've seen
and lived their struggles first hand. When I
realized I could be useful in communicating what I
had learned, I thought maybe it would inspire other
people to
educate themselves on this
issue and do some good," Bizzy said via statement.
Bizzy has previously
sponsored dinners, as well as holiday toy and
clothing giveaways, for the homeless in the Columbus
area.
"Working on the Walk
in My Shoes campaign is a great experience," Bizzy
added. "Encouragement, comfort and hope runs all
through this project. There are so many people who
have nothing, while others take so much for granted.
I think we owe it to ourselves to look at life as a
gift and try to enjoy every minute. People need to
hear and see that life is worth living and that even
when times are tough, we have a God of hope, who
believes in us, and love us unconditionally. I can't
wait to drop some knowledge of what I've learned on
the fans who understand where I'm coming from."
In related news,
Bizzy recently inked a deal with Virgin Records of
America and After Platinum Records. His label debut,
A Song For You is slated for release later
this year. Imperial Records, the urban label and
artist development unit of Caroline/EMI
music will assist in
marketing and promoting the new
album.
Bizzy currently has
no plans to reunite with Bone-Thugs-N-Harmony.

Bone is Back With His "Walk in My Shoes" Campaign and Explains Spiritual
Journey to Address the Plight of the Homeless
Los Angeles, CA (7th-sign.net ) - It has
been said that one of the best ways to understand another person's point
of view is to walk a mile in their shoes. It's no secret that in 2004,
Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum recording artist Bizzy Bone,
suffering from drug and alcohol abuse, voluntarily began life living on
the streets, giving up all his money and material wealth, and embarked
on a journey that changed his life forever.
For several months, Bizzy walked on foot,
trying to get from his hometown of Columbus to Cleveland. After many
miles and blisters on his feet, Bizzy could walk no more. It was a long,
hard road for him and not all the critics have been kind in his absence.
Many were puzzled and confused at the bizarre behavior and sightings of
Bizzy sleeping in bus stations and on the streets.
Much speculation has surfaced about this drastic turn of events.
However, now clean and focused, Bizzy explains, "Wandering in my
desolate state, I had an overwhelming desire to surrender myself. My
journey then became spiritual and my relationship with God was personal,
between me and him."
As a twist of faith would have it, it was through
poverty and the renunciation of his ego, that Bizzy crossed a spiritual
threshold that turned his journey around to where he is now using his
celebrity status to address the plight of the homeless crisis.
"I walked for a purpose. I walked for people
who have no home, fame, fortune, or glory. I walked for those people who
didn't care whether or not I am a Grammy Award winner or sold millions
of records. I walked for the people who have no one to turn to in their
time of need. I walked for the real soul survivors," said Bizzy.
While traveling on foot through Ohio, Bizzy
said, "I've learned more about life from the homeless, who are the
ultimate survivors than I have anywhere else. I admire them. I've
learned a lot about respect because I've seen and lived their struggles
first hand. When I realized I could be useful in communicating what I
had learned, I thought maybe it would inspire other people to educate
themselves on this issue and do some good."
Later this year, Bizzy plans to create a
revolution in public awareness with his "Walk In My Shoes" outreach
campaign that will address this growing problem by forming alliances and
partnerships with non-profit homeless organizations serving various
regions, beginning with Columbus, Ohio.
"Many people don't know this about me, but
outside music, my focus has always been to help the homeless and less
fortunate," said Bizzy. Bizzy also said, "This new program will be like
the one me and my manager Kanardo, did a few years ago. Twice, within
the same year, we rented a private location and gave away more than 1000
dinners that included, fresh turkeys, dressing, vegetables, bread,
juices, fruit and desserts to homeless families in the Columbus area.
During the Christmas holidays, we did the same thing but on a much
larger scale. Not only did we give away food, but shoes as well as
clothing and toys to the kids."
Today, Bizzy is busy with a new lease on life
and his career. In addition to his advocacy plans, he just inked a major
deal with Virgin Records of America and After Platinum Records. His
label debut, "A Song For You" is due for a 2007 release. Imperial
Records, the urban label and artist development unit of Caroline/EMI
music will assist in marketing and promoting the new album.
With his solid team of music industry veterans
that includes his managers, Kanardo Davis and Nena Jackson, along with
Ernie Romero, CEO of After Platinum Records and the production force of
After Platinum Records, Bizzy's says there's little danger that he will
ever go back to his old ways. "I'm working with professionals who
understand the nature of this business, people that I respect and trust.
Our aim is about success in whatever we do and together we will achieve
those goals because this is how we roll."
Davis, who has been managing Bizzy for 11
years, throughout all his trials and tribulations said, "Working with
Bizzy is truly an amazing experience. Watching him make music in the
studio is like witnessing Picasso painting a masterpiece. He is a
prodigy in his own right. Whenever one is in Bizzy's presence he has the
magical ability to fill your heart and lungs with love and laughter. He
believes his mission in life is not only to make beautiful music but
also to give to those less fortunate. Both on and off stage, Bizzy
exemplifies the true essence of family, love and happiness. He is an
inspiration to us all, to love thy neighbor and live life to the
fullest."
Jackson, the latest addition to Bizzy's team is
a veteran manager, who is well known amongst industry colleagues and
professionals for her unique and diverse range of skills collected from
her hands-on supervision and guidance of several artists' careers. "Now,
into my second project with Bizzy, I understand some things that the
world may still be confused about. Bizzy is a genius. He knows exactly
what he is doing and everything has a spiritual purpose. Although
several independent projects surfaced when Bizzy struggled to keep his
head above water, I believe that this will be Bizzy's best solo project
ever. He took his time to work on this album and now the old Bizzy Bone
is back, with a new flavor and a new attitude," said Jackson.
Romero, CEO of After Platinum Records said
about his relationship with Bizzy, "I feel very fortunate for the
opportunity to create music with such an unbelievably, brilliant artist
and all the more fortunate to share a friendship with such a remarkable
human being. Bizzy is a guy who's seen more hard times than most people
can even imagine, yet against all odds, he has overcome these
adversities while keeping his faith and positive outlook on life. I
think it is great Bizzy is using his celebrity status to help people
less fortunate and who better to help and inspire these people than
someone that has already taken a walk in their shoes."
When asked about whether or not Bizzy and the
group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony will ever reunite Bizzy explains, "I know
some fans out there are waiting for that to happen, but we'll just have
to see what the future holds. I love those guys, we made great music
together, but everything in life must change, nothing stays the same.
I'm going in a different direction, they are too and I wish nothing but
success for all of them in their future endeavors."
Throughout his career, Bizzy's personal life
has always served as source material for songs and he's had plenty to
draw from past experiences. Even in his darkest and most disturbing
moments, as real and as painful as they might be, Bizzy is still
standing strong like the warrior he is. He stands on his unshakeable
faith and truth that with God, and spiritual awareness, anyone can make
it through the storms of life.
"Working on the Walk in My Shoes campaign is a
great experience," Bizzy said. "Encouragement, comfort and hope runs all
through this project. There are so many people who have nothing, while
others take so much for granted. I think we owe it to ourselves to look
at life as a gift and try to enjoy every minute. People need to hear and
see that life is worth living and that even when times are tough, we
have a God of hope, who believes in us, and love us unconditionally. I
can't wait to drop some knowledge of what I've learned on the fans who
understand where I'm coming from."

HHDX New Bits (Rhymefest, Bone, Bonnaroo
Lineup)
Chicago emcee
Rhymefest might be the busiest man in
hip hop.
The Grammy Award-winning rapper,
whose recent debut LP Blue Collar scored a minor
hit with the single "Brand New," is thinking much bigger for
his sophomore album. El Che, titled both after his
government name and Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara,
is supposedly set to be the first hip hop album/stage
musical, according to an interview with Pitchforkmedia.
"The album tells a story from front to back, and you're
gonna have songs you can take from the album and put them on
the radio, and you won't even know the difference."
'Fest
reports that longtime-friend Kanye West
will play a bigger role than he did with Blue Collar,
and that he hopes for contributions from DJ Premier,
Ghostface Killah and Kelis. Currently being
organized with Anthony Mosley and the Chicago theater group
Collaboraction,
videos are being planned for every
song on the album.
Rap Group Bone Thugs N
Harmony have a new label. Krayzie, Wish,
and Lazie will call Interscope their new home. The
group is set to release their seventh studio album
Strength & Loyalty, in April on Interscope.
The group was brought out in
the early 90s by the late rapper Eazy-E.
Their most successful release to date is the 1995 E.1999
Eternal. The album went six times platinum and shor to
number one spot on Billboard's top 200 AlbumCharts and the
Top R&B/Hip-Hop Album Charts. The disc also included
the group's number one singles "1st of tha Month" and
"Crossroads" which was a tribute to the death of their
founder and friend Eazy.
The band hit some inner
turmoils when they kicked out then member Bizzy
in 2005 due to him missing many of the group's shows. Since
then they have released two albums Thug Stories and
Thug World Order, without their former band mate.
Strength & Loyalty
comes out Apr. 17.
The Bonnaroo line-up was leaked today
after a simple password protection error allowed millions of
users to gain access the exclusive list.
The Roots, Ziggy Marley &
the Melody Makers,
DJ Shadow and Aesop Rock.
The Bonnaroo
Music Festival is a four day
excursion in Tennessee, the founders of the festival, this
year purchased over 530 acres where the venue is usually
held.

Respect for Las Cruces: Artists on
Chicano All-Star Tour talk about the
love they receive in the City of Crosses
The
Chicano All-Star Tour, featuring several of the nation's hottest Chicano
Hip-Hop artists, will take over Peddler's Pavilion Friday night. Mr.
Capone-E, MC Magic, Mr. Criminal, Lil' Tweety, Cuete and the Hi-Power
Soldiers are scheduled to perform. The show will be hosted by the
legendary Chicano hip-hop promoter, AC the Promoter, and will feature
mixing by Hot 103's DJ Black.
While Capone-E and Criminal were in Las Cruces
for a concert last October, this show will mark Magic's first appearance
in the City of Crosses in two-and-a-half years. And he's looking forward
to it.
"I think of Las Cruces as one of my second
homes," Magic told Pulse this week. "The amount of love from fans always
amazes me. I'm really looking forward to seeing all of the familiar
faces I love."
Since he was here last, he has left the NB
Ridaz, a move that brings his career full circle. "I started as a solo
artist in 1995. I released a solo CD, and there was on song on it called
'Lost In Love.' When my group, Nastyboy Klick, was going into the studio
to record our second CD, we rerecorded that song for the album."
That song ended up helping to pave the group's
road to the national stage, and created the style and sound that is
Magic's
signature to this day-with the talkbox, the
female-sung hook, the almost-whispered lyrics as the group hushes though
one lowriding ballad after another.
When asked about his solo career, Magic said it
has been a blessing.
"Being a solo artist allows me to give
opportunities to other artists. Krystal Melody, who is featured on my
new single, 'Lies,' will be coming with me to the show. Sophia Maria is
another artist I'm helping develop. When you hear her record, you'll be
impressed."
He looks at his past as a logical progression.
"There's always been a sense of dedication to
each and every project I've worked on. And, in the end, it's helped me
build up a catalog of songs that I can perform today. The evolution is
something that was just meant to be."
Magic promises to give concertgoers their
money's worth.
"Fans can expect the best concert of the year.
We'll give them everything," he says. He also offers a little tip to the
guys: "It'll be like Valentine's Day all over again. Bring your
girlfriend."
When Mr. Capone-E was here in October, nothing
went as planned. Confusion surrounded the concert. The venue was changed
three days before the concert, and then again the day of the show due to
heavy rain. It was supposed to be an all-ages show, but the only venue
that could be found on such short notice was a bar. That day, Capone-E
vowed that he would come back to Las Cruces soon to make it up to the
fans who couldn't go to the show.
"It's important that we include the underage
fans. I want to be able to show love to the whole city; we don't want to
exclude anyone," Mr. Capone-E told Pulse. "I personally want to invite
all the people who couldn't go to the last show. This is going to go
down the way it was supposed to in October. It's going to be on the up
and up.
"Las Cruces is important to me. We've got a lot
of true fans there. We're from the big city of L.A., but we understand
the importance of staying true to fans everywhere. We get a lot of love
from Las Cruces, and I like to stop through when I can. We love to stop
when we're traveling from Tucson to El Paso. It's a great city between
cities, and we love our fans there. A few years ago, we signed
autographs at Hastings and realized just how big Chicano hip-hop is
there."
Capone-E also promises a great show.
"We're going to rock the show, make sure
everyone's having a good time, and make people remember the music so
they keep coming back. We have more energy than any other artists. Our
show's like a party."
James Molina, the show's promoter, was in the
crowd — a paying fan — at the botched October concert. We asked him why
it was important to give Capone-E the opportunity to make it up to the
fans.
"I think both artists, Capone-E and Magic, have
a great fan base in Las Cruces. We wanted to put together an all-ages
show, like the last one was supposed to be. A lot of things happened
last time that shouldn't have happened — things that could've been
avoided. Capone-E didn't want to leave a bad taste in fans' mouths, so
we immediately got to work on bringing him back, and doing it the right
way."
MR. CRIMINAL
Biggest hit is "We Ride" w/ Bizzy Bone. Will
have a new single in about a month, featuring Nate Dogg & Mr. Capone-E.
Rising star from L.A. (Making music for 5 years, with 4 albums on
Universal)
Tweety
Fan Favorite was the youngest Chicano rapper
EVER. He was 13 when he dropped his first release. (He's now 17.) Huge
young fan base, that has matured with him. Huge underground following.
Cuete
Has been in the business for five years,
working the underground circuit. Does A LOT of shows, works hard to get
his music out there, beginning to gain a lot of fans.

A Peabody's Mashup to Remember
Danger Mouse, now
known as one half of Gnarls Barkley, sampled
parts of Jay-Z's Black Album with
The Beatles (more commonly referred to
as the White Album) to form the
illegal Grey Album way back in 2004.
Some mashups trace all the way back to Frank
Zappa in the 1970s, others decades prior.
Well, Cleveland is now in on the act with
Monster Mash Friday, Feb. 9, featuring DJ
sets by Mushroomhead's lead singer Jeffrey
Hatrix, a.k.a. Jeffrey Nothing, and Sasha at
Peabody's Rockstar across from University
Center. And it's free for those over 21.
The Cauldron's Faith Hampton talked to
the two musical opposites about mashups and
more.The
Cauldron: What is your definition of a
mashup?
Jeffrey Nothing:
It happens when pieces of music are joined
into one to create something entirely new.
Metal meets rap or whatever you want to
mix... and it works and becomes something
never planned.
DJ Sasha:
Frank Sinatra and Lil' Jon having a little
baby boy.
TC: Why did you
decide to participate in this mashup?
Nothing:
Sasha and I have known each other for a
while, and we just wanted to do something
different to have a good time and bring
something different to the people.
Sasha: Just
like Jeff said, it's all about having a good
time and keeping an open mind.
TC: Mashups
between two different genres of music can be
dated back to the 50s. Why do you think
people thought that mashups would be a good
idea for the music business?
Nothing:
I think people like to be creative whether
they came up with a new idea or just enjoy
doing something different. It's still being
involved even if you didn't make either, or
any of the songs in the first place. I
really like some of the mashups that have
been made by Mushroomhead songs a lot.
Sasha: I
really don't care about the "music business"
or what's good for it. Honestly, music is
supposed to be about having a good time and
letting it loose and that's exactly what
mashups cause in people!
TC: Mashups are
also called "bastard pop" and "bootleg." Do
you think these phrases justify what the
combination of two different genres of music
really is?
Jeffrey Nothing's fantasy mashup: Michael
Jackson and Slayer
Nothing: I
think it's just new nicknames for this
genre. As there are so many names for all
the kinds of metal alone. I think people
just like having something new to judge or
label in fun or to dog. It's the nature of
the beast. I first heard of mashups through
Sasha and the song was "Sun's Goin' Down"
and it was Mushroomhead's "Sun Doesn't Rise"
mixed with the then most popular rap song in
the country... "It's Goin' Down." (Yung
Joc's hit) The results were incredible!
So, I say call it what you want, like it or
not. It's a new outlet and I personally like
it.
Sasha: I
think that the term "bootleg" definitely
defines it. Only because we're making an
"unofficial mix," that is not approved by
anyone.
TC: What is one
of your favorite mashups that you have heard
thus far?
Nothing:
The Mushroomhead one and there is a
Eurythymics/ Eminem piece, I like a lot as
well.
Sasha: I
really liked "Lean wit Undone." Which is Dem
Franchise Boys "Lean with It Rock with It"
with Korn's "Undone."
TC: Why do you
think the Jay- Z and Linkin Park mashup was
such a big hit?
Nothing:
Because both artists are golden right now.
They could both be known as Midas and it
made complete sense to join two talents that
the world already loves solo... it really
was a nobrainer. Labels today recognize the
success of both styles and when we were with
Universal, a label loaded with hip hop
talent, they were asking us from day one if
we would do a collaboration with a rap
artist and it would have been great. Maybe
it will still happen. In the same vibe or
direction Skinny and J Mann (from
Mushroomhead) did a song with Bizzy Bone a
while back also incorporating Gravy (from
216) on guitar to cross styles even though
the song wasn't a mashup it was along the
same lines.
Sasha:
Because it brought two different crowds
together and let them mosh and dance at the
same time.
TC: You guys are
going to have a mashup of your own at
Peabody's. Do you think that it will help
diversify the usual crowd?
Nothing:
I think the Cleveland music fans are pretty
diverse already. I think most people are
open to something new. Bands here have been
experimenting with joining styles for a long
time. I believe this just gives people
something else to try themselves and I'm all
for that.
Sasha: I
hope so, because it's all about music and
not politics.
TC: Who would
you like to see do a mashup together?
Nothing:
Michael Jackson and Slayer... I don't know
if they could ever be in the same room
together, but the extreme style clash could
be interesting, "the way you make me...
kill!"
Sasha: Tori
Amos and Cannibal Corpse would be fabulous.
TC: Do you two
listen to each other's type of music?
Nothing:
I like everything but country, and Sasha
listens to a pretty big variety as well. If
were going somewhere together and he's
driving, I usually like what he's listening
to aside from that few minutes of radio.
Sasha: Hell
yes. I've been a huge Mushroomhead fan for
years, so it is an honor to do a show with
Jeffrey.
TC: What do you
hope to accomplish with the mashup at
Peabody's?
Nothing:
A good time and some open minds, but in this
city that doesn't seem to fail. Cleveland's
a very good place to try new things and
Rockstar should be rockin' ... If the show
being free wasn't enough that whole place
will be on fire. Ventana and Mash-ijuana
Sasha: I
want people to go, "What the fuck?"
TC: Anything
else you want to say?
Nothing:
Come and see us play ... this should be
interesting and at least a good time.
Sasha: Bring
your dancing shoes!
